Fuji singer, Afeez Adeshina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, has been laid to rest in Ogun State, bringing closure to a brief but impactful life in music. The final rites took place on Friday, January 23, 2026, at his father’s residence in the Odo Rori Compound, Ayetoro Yewa, drawing family, friends, colleagues, and fans to the somber ceremony. Emotional scenes unfolded as Destiny Boy’s body, transported in a white vehicle, was carried on a local mat to its final resting place, accompanied by the cries of grieving loved ones.
Destiny Boy, who passed away on January 17 at the age of 22 following a prolonged illness, left a mark in Nigeria’s music scene. A family representative, Alabi Gbenga, described him as a “kind-hearted, humble, and exceptionally hardworking young man” whose passion for music led to collaborations across Nigeria, adding that his work and spirited personality left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
His mother, Saidat Adeshina, also explained that her son’s health struggles began two years ago during preparations for the naming ceremony of his first child. The family pursued every possible solution, both medical and traditional, to find a cure. Following his death, an audio clip purportedly featuring Saidat cursing her son went viral, prompting denials from both Destiny Boy’s sister and mother. Saidat also disclosed that she received death threats in connection with her son’s passing. On Monday, the Ogun State police command claimed that it had arrested a suspect in relation to the singer’s death.
A statement released by the singer’s family stated that he was born on June 24, 2003, and was raised in a “close-knit environment that shaped his values and character. Known from an early age for his calm demeanor, respectfulness, and quiet ambition, music became an outlet through which he expressed himself long before he achieved public recognition”.
It added, “What began as experimentation gradually turned into purpose, and he carved a place for himself in the Nigerian music industry through persistence rather than spectacle. Colleagues and collaborators consistently describe him as hardworking, disciplined, and eager to learn, traits that set him apart in an industry often defined by fleeting attention.
“Beyond music, Destiny Boy embraced responsibility early in life. He married Oluwatoyin, and their union was blessed with a son, Usman Obatide, born on November 12, 2024. Loved ones recall his devotion to family and his efforts to balance personal life with a rising music career, carrying these responsibilities with maturity well beyond his years.”
It added that though his life was short, Destiny Boy’s story was marked by determination, creativity, and quiet influence.
