The All Progressives Congress, APC, has dismissed reports suggesting that Vice President Kashim Shettima may be replaced as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general election, describing the claims as “untrue, baseless and purely speculative.”
The party made this known in a press statement issued on Monday via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, following what it described as a growing media frenzy and the circulation of names of alleged potential replacements for the vice president.
“Our Party states in categorical terms that the stories are purely speculative, untrue and utterly baseless,” the statement read.
Signed by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, CON, the party warned media organisations against giving attention to what it called rumour-peddlers and “mischievous news sources” whose aim is to create confusion and discord in the polity.
The APC further noted that, under existing laws and electoral regulations, political activities ahead of the next general election are not yet permitted, stressing that discussions about presidential tickets are premature.
“At this time, our Party remains focused on supporting President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in delivering the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and entrenching its bold reforms that are now steadily transforming the economy, building prosperity, and uplifting the living conditions of our people,” the party stated.
The ruling party also cautioned its ministers, senior government officials and party leaders against making comments that could fuel unnecessary speculation about the 2027 elections.
It urged them to concentrate on their responsibilities in government and party affairs, and to support the policies and programmes of the Tinubu-led administration.
“We call on our ministers, senior government and Party officials to avoid, wittingly or unwittingly, stoking needless speculations, and to focus on their primary duty of diligent service to government and our Party,” the statement added.
The APC’s reaction comes amid increasing political conversations in the media space regarding possible realignments ahead of the 2027 polls, though the party insists that no such discussions are currently on its agenda.
