Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, on Friday urged the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to pursue dialogue with the Federal Government to resolve his protracted legal and political battle.
Igboho’s call followed Kanu’s decision to officially cancel the Monday sit-at-home directive enforced across the South-East for nearly five years.
In a statement signed by his counsel, Pelumi Olajengbesi, Igboho commended Kanu for ending what he described as a prolonged economic shutdown that disrupted social and commercial activities in the region.
He said the suspension of the weekly lockdown was a “thoughtful and courageous step” capable of restoring peace, stability and economic recovery in the South-East.
“Chief Sunday Adeyemo wishes to commend the detained leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on his recent cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home across the South-East zone of Nigeria,” the statement read.
Beyond applauding the move, Igboho urged the IPOB leader to “vigorously explore dialogue and mediation with the Federal Government” as a pathway to break the deadlock surrounding his detention.
The activist expressed optimism that the administration of President Bola Tinubu would be open to negotiations aimed at fostering peace and mutual understanding.
While affirming that self-determination remains a constitutional right, Igboho stressed that constructive engagement and good-faith negotiations would better serve the interests of the South-East and the country at large.
He also condemned individuals and groups allegedly exploiting the unrest in the region for personal gains, warning that violence and economic sabotage must cease to pave the way for development.
“Those profiting from the desecration and despoliation of the South-East through violence should desist in the interest of peace and economic prosperity,” the statement added.
IPOB had introduced the sit-at-home order in August 2021 to protest Kanu’s extradition to Nigeria and continued detention.
Igboho’s intervention signals a rare alignment between two prominent regional agitators and underscores growing calls for negotiation as a means of resolving lingering political tensions in the country.
