Nigerian filmmaker, Biodun Stephen, has opened up about her circumcision experience, saying the pain remains fresh in her memory years later.

Speaking during an interview with Diaryofanaijagirl on Friday, she revealed that she was six when her grandmother carried out the procedure as part of a family tradition.

“Let’s talk about circumcision. In my own case, it was my grandma. Because I remember I was six when I went for circumcision. Yes. So I remember it vividly. The pain. Oh God. Vividly. Like, as I’m talking to you, I’m seeing the picture. I am. That mat. That afternoon,” she said.

Clarifying, she added, “It was a mat. Outside.”

Stephen said the act was rooted in culture, noting that her mother also underwent it.

“In my own case, it was my grandma. I think my mum was too, so it is a culture for them because I remember that I was six when I went for circumcision. So I remember it vividly, the pain,” she said.

She went on to describe how it happened.

“I mean, I was six, I did not know what was going on, and I loved my grandma. She said, ‘let us go somewhere’. They allowed me play, made me feel comfortable, and I even ate. Then they asked me to go have a shower, and I saw the woman putting a mat and a bowl on the floor. Next thing, they asked me to lie down, the pain was searing to the brain.”

On possible after-effects, she said it depends on how severe the cut was.

“It depends on how badly you’ve been cut. You’re not really able to enjoy sex or even experience orgasm,” she stated.

Speaking on relationships, Stephen said cheating is not necessarily a deal-breaker, but there should be consequences.

“Is cheating a deal-breaker for you? It’s not a deal-breaker for me. And I also believe the simplest punishment to give any man that has cheated on you is to let him go. It’s too easy. It’s such an easy stuff, man. Yes, because you see, you have to pay,” she added.
