The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, has revealed that she engaged in a heated shouting match with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over what she described as an urgent matter affecting the nation’s capital.
Kingibe made the disclosure on Friday during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.
According to her, the confrontation followed repeated attempts to reach the minister by phone, which were initially ignored.
“I have Wike’s number and he has mine too. I know I have the right number. I have called him before. He didn’t answer, and I kept calling and calling till he picked up the phone,” she said.
The lawmaker disclosed that when the minister eventually answered, the conversation quickly degenerated into a shouting match.
“And then he proceeded to yell at me. We yelled at each other for a few minutes, and we put the phone down,” she stated.
Kingibe explained that the issue she sought to discuss was urgent, prompting her persistence in calling the minister.
“For me, that issue was urgent and that’s why I called him. And I was determined that he was going to pick it up,” she added.
The senator further revealed that the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, later intervened by initiating a three-way telephone conversation, which helped to calm tensions and resolve the matter.
“Then the Senate President intervened and did a three-way call, and we resolved the issue,” she said.
Kingibe also recounted that during the exchange, she had requested a physical meeting with the minister at his office, but he declined.
“I said, ‘Are you in your office? Let me come and see you.’ He said, ‘No, no, no, don’t come yet here.’
That was the conversation. He sounded as if I was going to harm him,” she said.
The development highlights simmering tensions between the legislative representative of the FCT and the minister overseeing the administration of the territory, amid ongoing debates over governance and oversight in the capital city.
As of the time of filing this report, Wike had yet to publicly respond to the senator’s claims.
