The President of Benfica, Rui Costa, has defended suspended midfielder Gianluca Prestianni following allegations of racism.
Prestianni was recently suspended by UEFA from Benfica’s Champions League play-off second leg against Real Madrid.
This was after being accused of racially abusing Vinicius Junior.
Reacting to the controversy, Costa expressed confidence in the player’s character.
According to Fabrizio Romano on X on Tuesday, Costa said: “Prestianni is being called a racist, but he is anything but racist.

He did not provide further details about the allegations but maintained that the midfielder’s conduct has always aligned with the club’s values.
Costa’s comments come amid increased scrutiny of football culture in Europe, where clubs and officials face growing pressure to respond swiftly to discrimination claims.
UEFA has already announced a provisional suspension pending the outcome of its investigation.
