Rivers Crisis: Fubara Pledges Cooperation With All Assembly Members

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has said he is ready to work with all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including the newly elected lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress.

The governor stated this while reacting to the outcome of the February 21 bye-elections into the state assembly.

The elections produced Ukalikpe Napoleon as winner of the Ahoada East State Constituency II seat, while Loolo Bulabari Henrietta clinched the Khana State Constituency II seat.

Fubara described their victories as well-deserved, noting that the outcome reflected the confidence reposed in them by their constituents.

“It is the beauty of democracy. When the people believe in your capacity, they will give you their votes,” the governor said.

He added, “I look forward to working with them and their colleagues in the Rivers State House of Assembly for the progress of our state.”

The governor also commended residents of Ahoada East and Khana constituencies for what he described as their peaceful conduct before, during and after the elections, saying the exercise demonstrated democratic maturity in the state.

The development comes days after the Rivers State House of Assembly suspended

impeachment proceedings initiated against the governor amid a prolonged political crisis in the state.

The rift had pitched Fubara against his predecessor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, culminating in months of political tension.

The crisis, which significantly polarised the state’s political structure, had earlier resulted in a six-month period of emergency rule.

Political observers say the governor’s conciliatory tone signals a fresh attempt to rebuild legislative-executive relations and stabilise governance in the oil-rich state.
