Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that the choice of his successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election will be based on competence and loyalty to the state, rather than personal allegiance to him.

Speaking at the 12th ‘Omituntun’ Annual Ramadan Public Lecture at the Ibadan North Local Government Motor Park, Agodi Gate, Makinde said the decision was informed by lessons from past administrations, where some leaders installed successors who later “misbehaved” once in office.

“I have spoken with colleagues whose successors strayed after taking office. The common thread is that they chose individuals they believed would be loyal to them personally. I want to make it clear: whoever emerges as my successor must be loyal to Oyo State, not to Seyi Makinde,” he said.

The governor urged citizens to pray for a peaceful transition and warned against political violence, emphasizing that loyalty to the state, rather than party or personal ties, should guide leadership choices.

Makinde highlighted key achievements of his administration, including clearing over ₦25 billion in outstanding gratuities inherited from previous governments.

He also announced an increase in monthly gratuity payments from ₦1 billion to ₦3 billion, ensuring that no retiree would be owed by May 2027.

He cited the upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport as a milestone, expressing optimism that Hajj pilgrims would begin using the airport by May 2026.

In appreciation of the Muslim community’s support since 2019, Makinde donated seven buses to mosques across the state and presented a brand-new SUV to guest lecturer

Sheikh Jamiu Ajadi Sanusi (Ami Olohun). Sheikh Sanusi, in his lecture on contentment, commended the government’s developmental efforts and urged residents to embrace peaceful coexistence.

Former governor and Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rasheed Ladoja, described Ramadan as a period of perseverance and tolerance, urging citizens to pray for continued progress in Oyo State.
