Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has accused governors defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) of prioritising “personal survival” over ideology, describing the wave of cross-carpeting as a product of intimidation rather than genuine support for the ruling party.
Reacting to the defection of Ahmadu Fintiri from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, Atiku, who is now a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said politicians have the right to choose their political platform, but warned Nigerians against equating defections with popularity.
In a statement issued on Friday by his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku described recent political realignments as evidence of a government “weaponising state institutions to suppress opposition” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“This government fears accountability. It fears credible elections. It fears the people,” he said.
“Governors may defect for personal survival. Nigerians are defecting in their millions because they want survival. What will the APC campaign on in 2027 — hunger? hardship? hopelessness?”
The former vice-president urged citizens to resist selling their votes, stressing that the 2027 elections will be determined by the collective will of Nigerians.
“Do not trade your future. Do not mortgage your children’s tomorrow. In 2027, the people will have their say — and their will shall prevail,” Atiku said.
A founding member of both the APC and PDP, Atiku defected to the ADC in November 2025, citing the need for a political platform aligned with his values. He also noted that even his children are free to pursue independent political paths.
