… Targets APC Governorship Ticket

A former senator and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, has declared that she is prepared to succeed Governor Dapo Abiodun in 2027, insisting she will not step down for any aspirant in the race for the Ogun State governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress.

Obasanjo made this known on Saturday during a media parley held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, where she also applauded the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu, describing them as critical steps toward stabilising the nation’s economy.

The former Ogun Central senator said recent reforms, particularly in the foreign exchange market, had restored a level of predictability to the economy.

“One of the major gains is the stabilisation of the naira. When businesses can predict exchange rates, they are able to plan better. Importers and exporters can determine costs and returns without the fear of sudden fluctuations,” she said.

She added that improved economic coordination and growing international partnerships under Tinubu’s administration had strengthened trade prospects and enhanced security collaboration.

Obasanjo also defended the controversial Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, saying the project would unlock economic opportunities along the coastal corridor and reduce traffic congestion on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

According to her, Ogun State currently bears the brunt of heavy vehicular movement from travellers heading to the northern and eastern parts of the country.

“The coastal road is a developmental project. It will connect ports, stimulate commerce and decongest major transport routes passing through Ogun State,” she stated.

On her governorship ambition, the epidemiologist dismissed suggestions that her aspiration was symbolic or designed to clear the path for another contender within the APC.

“I am not in this race to step down for anyone. I will compete and do everything legitimately possible to secure the party’s ticket,” she declared.

Obasanjo pledged to consolidate on the industrialisation drive of the current administration, noting that the proliferation of factories in Ogun had positioned the state as a leading manufacturing hub.

“With the number of factories springing up, Ogun is fast becoming the industrial hub of Nigeria. That translates to jobs, revenue and value addition. We must deepen that momentum,” she said.

She further outlined plans to expand agricultural value chains, leveraging the state’s vast arable land, proximity to Lagos markets and access to seaports to boost food production and exports.

The governorship hopeful also promised significant investment in ICT and technology-driven education to equip youths with skills for the digital economy.

Explaining her decision to join the APC, Obasanjo said political relationships and outreach from party leaders influenced her move.

“In politics, relationships matter. Many people I have worked with over the years are now in the APC, and that made the platform comfortable for me,” she said.
