Former Manchester United and Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has named André Onana among the current world-class goalkeepers, placing him ahead of David Raya in his latest assessment of elite shot-stoppers.
Speaking in an interview shared on ESPN UK’s X page, the former goalkeeper highlighted a small group he considers truly world-class.
Alongside Onana, the list includes Alisson Becker of Liverpool, Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid, Gianluigi Donnarumma of AC Milan and Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich.
Several other prominent goalkeepers were not included in the category. They include Jan Oblak, Marc‑André ter Stegen, Yann Sommer, Nick Pope, Jordan Pickford, Robert Sánchez and Mike Maignan.
Van der Sar’s endorsement comes at a time when Onana has faced scrutiny during his spell with Manchester United before his current loan move to Trabzonspor in the Turkish Süper Lig.
The Dutch legend’s comments have also sparked debate among fans, particularly his preference for Onana over Raya, who is on the verge of winning the Premier League title with Arsenal.
Reacting on X, one user, @TheSuper7, wrote: “Between Ruud Gullit, Ten Haag, Arne Slot and now Edwin, you have yo think there is definitely something wrong in the tap water in Netherlands”.
Another user, @Saka_army247, commented: “Manchester United legends are like faulty clocks, they are right twice in a day. I have no issue with his pick, you can’t do more than your IQ permits”.
