Human rights activist and co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls Movement, Aisha Yesufu, has described the forthcoming 2027 general elections as a “war,” saying Nigerians must prepare for a decisive battle for the country’s future.
Yesufu made the remark on Thursday during a live programme on Channels Television, where she spoke on the political climate ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to her, the next election would be a defining moment for Nigeria, insisting that citizens who desire change must be ready to confront the challenges associated with the electoral process.
“As we go into 2027, let me tell you, it’s a war we are going into. Yes, it’s a war; we are fighting for our lives,” she said.
The activist stressed that the election would determine the direction of the country, adding that it could no longer be treated as routine political activity.
She said Nigerians were increasingly frustrated with the current state of governance and were prepared to challenge what she described as the “monopoly of recklessness” in the nation’s political space.
Yesufu also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress, accusing the party of failing to demonstrate the credibility needed to address the country’s challenges.
“APC has not shown it’s a party that has the credibility to do the right thing. It has always shown itself to behave in an ‘any-howness’ kind of manner,” she said.
The activist, however, expressed confidence that Nigerians were becoming more politically conscious and determined to demand accountability from political leaders.
She added that growing public dissatisfaction with governance could significantly shape the outcome of the 2027 general elections.
Nigeria is expected to conduct presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state assembly elections in 2027, with political parties already beginning early permutations and alignments ahead of the contest.
