Violence erupted on Saturday during the local government congress of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party loyal to Nyesom Wike in Oyo State as suspected hoodlums attacked party members and vandalised property across several venues.
The attacks were reported in parts of Ibadan and other local government areas where the faction held its congress, leaving several members injured and vehicles destroyed.
At Bodija in Ibadan North Local Government Area, suspected thugs reportedly stormed the venue of the congress and disrupted the exercise, forcing participants to flee for safety.
A member of the faction, Julius Adekunle, alleged that the attacks were coordinated and targeted at multiple congress venues across the state.
According to him, the violence was recorded in Ogbomoso North, Ibarapa Central, Akinyele and Ibadan North local government areas, among others.
Adekunle said at least 10 members of the faction were assaulted during the attacks, while several vehicles and other properties belonging to party members were vandalised.
He also alleged that the residence of a party leader and former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Hazeem Gbolarunmi, located in Bodija, was invaded by hoodlums who destroyed property worth millions of naira.
“It was a planned attack because the hoodlums touched many of the venues across the state,” Adekunle said.
“Reports from Ogbomoso North, Ibarapa Central, Akinyele and Ibadan North LGAs showed that not less than 10 of our members were attacked, while several vehicles were vandalised.”
Reacting to the incident, the factional state chairman, Abdulrahman Akinoso, described the development as chaotic and condemned the violence.
Akinoso called on security agencies to investigate the attacks and ensure that those responsible were apprehended and prosecuted.
The incident is the latest sign of deepening internal divisions within the PDP in Oyo State as rival factions continue to struggle for control of party structures ahead of future political contests.
Efforts to obtain comments from security authorities in the state as of the time of filing this report were unsuccessful.
