Ogun State governorship aspirant, Iyabo Obasanjo, has urged decisive action to ensure women’s rights translate into real justice, as Nigeria joins the world to mark International Women’s Day.
In a statement released yesterday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant celebrated Nigerian women while emphasizing that legal protections alone are insufficient. She said the global observance should inspire tangible progress, not just rhetoric.
“Fellow Ogun women, today we join millions around the world to celebrate International Women’s Day. This year’s theme, ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,’ is a powerful call to move beyond promises and toward results,” Obasanjo said.
The former lawmaker noted that while laws and policies exist to protect women—such as equal pay, anti-discrimination laws, and representation quotas—these rights often fail to translate into practical justice.
“Justice is what happens when a woman can walk into a courtroom, a boardroom, or a doctor’s office and be seen as a whole and equal human being. It is the bridge between the law and our lived reality. But justice doesn’t happen by accident. It requires action,” she said.
Obasanjo stressed that achieving meaningful progress requires confronting subtle workplace and societal biases and investing in the wellbeing of women and girls nationwide.
“Action means challenging the quiet biases in our offices. It means investing in the health and safety of girls everywhere. When we invest in women, the entire community benefits,” she added.
The APC aspirant also addressed the misconception that women work against one another. She described women as her strongest supporters, citing mentorship from her mother, grandmother, and other formidable women.
“If elected the first female governor in Nigeria, it will show what is possible and inspire girls across the country,” she said, calling on women to unite for greater equality and opportunities.
Obasanjo concluded by urging collective efforts to ensure women play a stronger role in shaping Nigeria’s future.
