Gowon also called on Nigerians to support the Federal Government’s policies aimed at strengthening economic growth and restoring stability.
The elder statesman spoke with journalists after a closed-door meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
“I came to see the President and to thank him for all the good work he is doing for the country,” Gowon said.
He explained that the meeting provided an opportunity to review developments across key sectors of the nation and assess the progress recorded under the current administration.
According to him, discussions during the visit centred largely on the country’s economic situation and broader governance issues.
“We had a look at all the work the President is doing and the progress Nigeria is making economically and otherwise,” Gowon added.
The former Nigerian leader noted that the administration was grappling with a wide range of issues affecting the political, economic and social sectors, stressing that governing a diverse country like Nigeria required careful balancing of priorities.
“Isn’t he doing the best he can all around? Every area — political, economic and social sectors — requires attention,” he said.
Gowon, however, acknowledged that insecurity remained one of the major challenges confronting the country, noting that the government must continue to prioritise national unity and stability.
He emphasised that addressing security concerns was largely the responsibility of the government and its security institutions.
“Well, the problem happening today is one that only the government can really deal with,” he stated.
The former Head of State expressed confidence that the administration was taking measured steps to prevent the situation from worsening, adding that ongoing efforts by the government and security agencies would eventually restore peace across the country.
“The government is handling it the best it can to ensure Nigeria eventually achieves the peace it requires and deserves,” Gowon said.
Gowon ruled Nigeria as military Head of State between 1966 and 1975.
