President Bola Tinubu on Sunday received the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting comes six days after the Sultan was absent from the President’s interfaith Iftar dinner with traditional and religious leaders held on Monday, March 9.

It also comes barely five days before the end of the month-long fasting.

At the Iftar event, the Sultan was represented by the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, who stood in for both the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and the Sultan.

Photos released by the State House media office on Sunday showed the President and the Sultan in warm exchanges during what appeared to be a private audience.

The Sultan, who is also the President-General of the NSCIA, has maintained close consultations with the President on national issues.

The President has hosted multiple Iftar dinners at the Presidential Villa since the commencement of the holy month, including sessions with governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives, security chiefs, and leaders of political parties.

During the March 9 interfaith Iftar, which brought together Muslim and Christian leaders as well as traditional rulers from all six geopolitical zones, President Tinubu vowed that Nigeria would never surrender to terrorists.

“Our unity is unshakable,” the President had declared at the event, which was attended by the Christian Association of Nigeria President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, who was represented by the ECWA President, Dr Stephen Baba-Panya.

The purpose of Sunday’s closed-door meeting between the President and the Sultan was not disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
