Babcock University has announced a ₦10 million hackathon as the highlight of its second annual Babcock Tech Week (BTW), scheduled to hold from March 22 to 28, 2026.

The week-long event, themed “Tethered — Connected Across Disciplines,” is organised by the Babcock University Computer Club in collaboration with the Finance Students Association, Google Developer Groups on Campus, Babcock, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Babcock.

Unlike its maiden edition, the organisers said this year’s programme would accommodate participants beyond the university community, positioning it as one of the most inclusive student-driven innovation events in Nigeria.

At the centre of the event is the “Tethered Hackathon and Pitchathon,” a ₦10 million competition designed to foster cross-disciplinary innovation.

Speaking on the initiative, the Convener, Dunmade Majuyi, said the hackathon had already generated significant interest ahead of its commencement.

He disclosed that the competition would award ₦4 million to the winning team, ₦2 million to the first runner-up, and ₦1 million to the second runner-up, alongside several category-based prizes.

Majuyi explained that participating teams would be required to include at least one member from outside the School of Computing, a measure aimed at encouraging collaboration across different fields.

According to him, “Every competing team must include at least one student from outside the School of Computing — a structural requirement that ensures the competition rewards genuine cross-disciplinary thinking, not just technical execution.”

As part of the programme, a career fair will be held on March 24, providing students and external participants with opportunities to connect directly with employers and industry stakeholders.

The organisers noted that the fair would grant organisations access to Babcock’s talent pool while offering students pathways to internships and employment.

Majuyi described the theme of the event as a reflection of the growing need for collaboration across sectors.

He said, “The most consequential work happening at the intersection of technology, finance, health, and society cannot be done by any single discipline alone.”

Also speaking, the Head of Partnerships and External Relations for BTW 2026, Obata Onyelukachukwu, said the event would serve as a bridge between emerging talents and industry players.

“There is a generation of builders at Babcock that the industry hasn’t fully met yet. BTW is where that meeting happens,” he said.

Onyelukachukwu added that participating organisations would gain early access to a pool of highly skilled and innovative students.

The event will also feature panel sessions focusing on Africa’s digital future, funding innovation, and capital markets and venture ecosystems.

Confirmed speakers include the Chief Executive Officer of Open Access Data Centres, Ayotunde Coker; CEO of Arravo, Ayo Adegboye; Technical Lead at Paystack, Ifeoluwa Sobogun; and Chairman of CreditRegistry, Fatumata Coker.

Industry partners for the event include Arravo Technology, Open Access Data Centres, Blue Marina Asset Management, Access Holdings, CreditRegistry, and Cordros Securities, among others.
