The Yobe State Police Command has raised concerns over the spread of false alarms and unverified information, warning that such actions could cause panic and endanger lives.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Dungus Abdulkarim, referred to recent incidents at prayer gatherings where false alarms led to chaos among worshippers.

“The Command notes with concern the devastating consequences of false alarms in crowded places. Such actions not only undermine public confidence but may also lead to tragic outcomes, including injuries or loss of life due to stampedes,” he said.

The Command urged residents to avoid raising false alarms and advised that any suspicious activity should be reported discreetly to security personnel.

“Members of the public are strongly advised to refrain from raising false alarms. If any suspicious activity or object is noticed, individuals are urged to discreetly inform security operatives present for prompt response and possible coordinated evacuation, if necessary,” Abdulkarim stated.

He also cautioned against spreading unverified information, especially on social media, stressing that this could generate unnecessary fear and confusion.

“Furthermore, the public is cautioned against spreading unverified or misleading information capable of creating fear, confusion, or panic. Citizens are encouraged to verify information through appropriate authorities before dissemination,” he added.

Abdulkarim called on organisers of prayer gatherings to coordinate closely with security agencies to ensure smooth and safe events.

“The Command also calls on prayer committees to work closely with conventional and quasi-security outfits to ensure proper planning and coordination. Adequate security personnel will be deployed across all designated locations to guarantee safety,” he said.

He further reiterated that the Command would not tolerate rumours or content that could disrupt public order.

“The Command reiterates its warning against the spread of false information, rumours, or any content capable of causing public disorder,” Abdulkarim said.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Emmanuel Ado, congratulated Muslims on the completion of Ramadan and extended Sallah greetings.

“Security remains a collective responsibility. The Command urges all residents to cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free Sallah celebration and beyond,” the statement concluded.

It could be recalled that a total of 23 persons were confirmed dead, while 108 sustained varying degrees of injuries following a bomb explosion that simultaneously rocked three locations in Maiduguri on Monday.

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that the affected locations included the Post Office area flyover, Maiduguri Monday Market, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
