The Convener of a political and development advocacy group, the United Premier Movement (UPM), Chief Olalekan Shoyinka, popularly known as Ayinla Egba, has commended the Executive Chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government, Hon. Balogun Olaniyi Afeez (BOA), for flagging off the rehabilitation of the 1.266-kilometre Isale-Oja Kuto Road and bridge project.
The commendation was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Convener of the group, who described the intervention as timely and people-focused.
Shoyinka noted that the project addresses the long-standing infrastructural challenges that have plagued residents, traders and commuters in the area for over two decades, particularly perennial flooding and the deteriorated condition of the road.
According to him, the initiative reflects a clear understanding of governance priorities, stressing that the Chairman has demonstrated a commitment to placing the welfare of the people at the forefront of his administration.
He added that the development is particularly significant as it aligns with key promises he made to residents during the last local government election, expressing satisfaction that such projects are now being executed regardless of political differences.
Shoyinka emphasised that political competition should not hinder development, noting that democracy is strengthened when political actors set aside partisan interests to work in the collective interest of the people after elections.
He further applauded the Chairman’s plan to remodel the Kuto Market, describing it as a strategic move that would enhance accessibility, improve organisation, and boost commercial activities within the area.
The UPM Convener, however, urged the Chairman to sustain the momentum by running an inclusive administration that engages all stakeholders in the governance process.
He stressed that inclusive governance would promote unity, strengthen public trust and ensure that developmental projects are impactful and sustainable.
Shoyinka prayed for divine guidance for the Chairman, expressing optimism that with sustained commitment, more people-oriented projects would be delivered for the benefit of the people of Abeokuta South.
“Government must be commended when it performs and constructively criticised when it falls short,” he said, adding that the group would continue to acknowledge and support positive strides in governance in the interest of the people.
