Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has reaffirmed his loyalty to Vice President Kashim Shettima while calling on residents to offer prayers for a credible successor ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Zulum made the appeal in a statewide address on Friday, urging citizens to prioritise unity, stability and security as political activities intensify across the state.
The governor expressed sympathy for victims of insecurity in Borno, noting that the resilience of residents remains the backbone of the state despite years of insurgency.
He stressed that collective prayers and community cooperation remain vital to overcoming the prevailing security challenges.
As political preparations gather momentum, Zulum warned against actions capable of destabilising the state, cautioning individuals and groups aiding insurgents that they would face the full weight of the law.
He vowed that anyone providing information, shelter or logistics to criminal elements would be tracked, arrested and prosecuted.
Commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the governor praised the Federal Government’s financial support for military operations, including funding for the Multi-National Joint Task Force, describing the intervention as crucial to sustaining counter-insurgency efforts.
Zulum also appreciated Vice President Shettima for representing the President during a recent sympathy visit to the state, describing the gesture as a show of solidarity with the people of Borno.
Reiterating his political stance, the governor said he had remained fair, just and inclusive in his dealings with political stakeholders since assuming office in 2019.
He emphasised that his loyalty to Shettima remained unwavering.
“My dear people, as the political season intensifies, tensions may rise. But we must align our political interests with the stark realities of our security situation,” Zulum said.
“Let us not allow politics to undermine the hard-earned peace we have built.”
He urged political actors and their supporters to place the collective interest of Borno State above personal ambitions, warning against individuals seeking to exploit the prevailing situation to create political instability.
Zulum further appealed to residents to pray for divine guidance in the emergence of a worthy successor, noting that leadership remains a matter determined by God.
“As we look to the future and choose a new leader for our state, I urge all citizens to pray fervently for a worthy successor. Power belongs to Allah, and He grants it to whom He wills,” he said.
The governor also sought forgiveness for any shortcomings in his administration, while reaffirming his commitment to protecting lives and property across Borno State.
