March 23, (THEWILL) — Outrage has erupted in the United Kingdom following a suspected hate-driven arson attack that destroyed four ambulances belonging to a Jewish volunteer emergency service in north London.
The vehicles, operated by Hatzola, were set ablaze in the early hours of Monday in Golders Green, a neighbourhood with a significant Jewish population.
Authorities have since confirmed that the incident is being treated as a suspected antisemitic hate crime, sparking widespread condemnation and concern over rising targeted attacks.
The Metropolitan Police Service said officers responded swiftly to reports of the fire and have launched a full-scale investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that the blaze was deliberately set, with detectives now examining CCTV footage and appealing to the public for useful information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible.
Emergency response teams from the London Fire Brigade battled the flames with multiple fire engines, and dozens of firefighters deployed to the scene. The fire was eventually contained after an intense operation lasting over an hour.
Although no lives were lost in the incident, the destruction caused significant damage. Oxygen cylinders inside the ambulances reportedly exploded during the fire, sending shockwaves through nearby buildings, shattering windows and forcing some residents to evacuate temporarily as a safety precaution.
Community leaders have described the attack as both “chilling” and deeply disturbing, noting that the targeted vehicles provide life-saving medical services. The location of the incident, reportedly near a synagogue, has further heightened fears among residents and raised concerns about the safety of Jewish communities in the area.
Reacting to the development, UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting condemned the attack as “sickening”, stressing that acts of hatred against any group have no place in society. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling antisemitism and ensuring the protection of vulnerable communities.
Security analysts say the incident reflects a troubling pattern of increasing antisemitic incidents across parts of Europe, amid ongoing geopolitical tensions linked to the Middle East. The targeting of emergency medical vehicles has been particularly alarming, given their humanitarian role in saving lives.
Despite the destruction, Hatzola has assured residents that its services remain operational, with contingency arrangements in place to maintain emergency response capabilities across northwest London.
Meanwhile, police have intensified patrols in Golders Green and surrounding areas as investigations continue, urging residents to remain calm but vigilant while efforts are underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
