March 24, (THEWILL) — Lebanon has declared Iran’s diplomatic envoy persona non grata and ordered him to leave the country by Sunday, in a move that underscores a widening rift between Beirut and Tehran amid escalating regional tensions.
The decision, announced on Tuesday by the Lebanese Foreign Ministry, effectively withdraws official recognition of the Iranian representative, compelling his immediate exit.
Officials familiar with the development said the envoy was summoned and formally notified of the decision, which reflects mounting concerns within Lebanon over external influence and the country’s fragile political and security balance.
The expulsion marks a rare but significant diplomatic step by Lebanon against Iran, a country long seen as wielding considerable influence in Lebanese affairs, particularly through political and security alliances.
As of press time, there has been no immediate official response from Tehran, but diplomatic sources indicate that the move may trigger reciprocal actions or further escalation in tensions between both countries.
