March 24, (THEWILL) — German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on Tuesday delivered a rare and forceful rebuke of the United States and Israel over their ongoing war with Iran, describing the military campaign as a breach of international law and warning of a deepening rift in transatlantic relations.
Speaking at an official event, Steinmeier said the conflict was “contrary to international law” and a “politically disastrous mistake,” openly questioning the legal justification advanced by Washington for the military action.
The German leader also dismissed claims that the war was launched in response to an imminent threat, arguing that such a justification “did not hold water,” and insisting that international law must be upheld irrespective of political considerations.
His remarks mark one of the strongest criticisms yet from a senior European figure, and signal growing unease among Western allies over the legality and consequences of the conflict, which has escalated tensions across the Middle East.
Steinmeier further warned of a “deep rupture” in relations between Europe and the United States, likening the strain to the geopolitical fallout following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
The war, which began in late February with coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets, has since triggered retaliatory attacks by Iran, leading to widespread destruction, rising civilian casualties, and disruptions to global energy supplies.
