Women’s Group Pushes For Greater Representation In Ogun Advocacy Drive

Women from three local government areas in Ogun State on Tuesday intensified calls for greater political inclusion, urging lawmakers to support increased female representation across Nigeria’s governance structure.

Operating under the aegis of the Nigerian League of Women Voters, the women drawn from Ijebu-Ode, Odogbolu and Ijebu North-East converged on the Ijebu Central Federal Constituency, where they presented their demands to the lawmaker representing the area, Femi Ogunbanwo.

The delegation formally requested the inclusion of 74 additional women in Nigeria’s political framework, describing the move as critical to promoting equity, strengthening democracy, and driving national development.

The women, who maintained a calm but firm disposition throughout the engagement, said their advocacy reflects growing grassroots support for gender-balanced governance, particularly at a time when concerns over underrepresentation of women in politics persist nationwide.

Speaking during the visit, the group emphasised that its approach remains rooted in dialogue and institutional engagement rather than confrontation, noting that sustainable reforms can only be achieved through collaboration with policymakers.

“Our mission is clear — to ensure that women are not just participants in the electoral process, but active decision-makers at all levels of governance,” a representative of the group said.

Responding, Ogunbanwo commended the delegation for its organisation and peaceful conduct, assuring them that their submission would be given due consideration.

He said, “Your advocacy is timely and গুরুত্বপূর্ণ. I appreciate the constructive manner in which you have presented your demands. Be assured that this will receive the attention it deserves.”

The advocacy visit forms part of ongoing efforts by NILOWV to address systemic barriers limiting women’s access to leadership positions, while also promoting voter education and challenging practices that undermine female political participation.

Observers say the mobilisation of women at the constituency level signals a widening movement that could influence policy discussions at the national level, as pressure mounts for more inclusive governance in Nigeria.

The latest push from Ijebu communities underscores a growing consensus that women’s representation is no longer a peripheral issue but a central component of democratic development.
