The Oluwo of Iwo, Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has said Nigerians may push for a constitutional amendment to allow President Bola Tinubu to remain in office beyond the constitutionally permitted two terms.

Akanbi made the remark in a statement issued on Sunday to commemorate Tinubu’s 74th birthday, describing the President as a decisive leader whose policies have begun to reposition the country’s economy.

According to the monarch, growing public confidence in Tinubu’s leadership could trigger calls for a review of the constitution to extend his tenure.

“Many Nigerians may call for a constitutional review to enable Tinubu to serve more than two terms in office. He is a leader who knows what he is doing,” he said.

The traditional ruler praised the administration’s economic reforms, noting that efforts to tackle long-standing structural challenges were beginning to yield results.

He cited improvements in key economic indicators, including the strengthening of the naira and a rise in Nigeria’s foreign reserves, which he said had grown significantly in recent months.

Akanbi attributed the gains to policies such as exchange rate unification, increased oil production, and improved foreign investment inflows.

He also commended the Federal Government’s decision to grant autonomy to local governments, noting that the move had enhanced grassroots governance and boosted allocations to subnational entities.

On infrastructure, the monarch highlighted ongoing projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and the Sokoto-Badagry Road, describing them as critical to national development and economic integration.

Akanbi further lauded Tinubu’s willingness to take difficult decisions, saying previous administrations had shied away from bold reforms due to public pressure.

“You are not yet a capable leader until you take decisions and stand by them,” he added.

He expressed optimism that the current reforms would translate into improved living standards, adding that the next phase of governance should focus on consolidating economic stability.

Tinubu marked his 74th birthday with a low-key celebration, observing prayers at the National Mosque in Abuja.
