The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, B-Zone, has expressed concern over what it described as the growing misuse of digital platforms and alleged political marginalisation of Muslims in parts of Southern Nigeria.
The group made its position known in a communiqué issued at the end of its 116th Islamic Vacation Course held between April 2 and April 6, 2026, across four centres in Ogun/Lagos, Oyo/Osun, Ekiti/Ondo/Edo, and Bayelsa/Rivers states.
The programme, which attracted thousands of participants including Islamic scholars, academics, media professionals, engineers and business experts, focused on the theme, “Saved Sect and Dilemma of the Digital World.”
In the communiqué signed by its Amir, Dr. Moshood Kolawole; General Secretary, Mallam AbdulWakil Omotayo Akanni; and Public Relations Officer, Mallam Moshood Tahir, the society warned that unchecked use of social media was eroding moral values and promoting misinformation.
The group said, “The digital space is increasingly replacing integrity with dishonesty, credibility with mistrust, and sound judgment with carelessness, leaving many vulnerable to misinformation and manipulation.”
It cautioned Nigerians against the spread of fake news, religious bias and inflammatory content, noting that such practices could trigger unrest if not properly managed.
The MSSN urged users to deploy digital platforms for national development rather than activities capable of deepening division.
On politics, the society alleged that Muslims were being sidelined in the political leadership of some South-West states despite their numerical strength, calling on political parties to ensure inclusiveness in candidate selection.
It stressed that the mobilisation of its members ahead of future elections would be intensified, urging eligible Nigerians, particularly Muslim youths, to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards.
The communiqué also emphasised the need for academic excellence, urging students to shun examination malpractice and uphold integrity in their studies.
It called on parents, schools and relevant authorities to reward academic diligence and discourage unethical practices, especially as candidates prepare for key examinations such as the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination and the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
While condemning religious intolerance and actions capable of inciting violence, the group urged security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that perpetrators of unrest are brought to justice.
The MSSN reaffirmed its commitment to promoting moral discipline, intellectual growth and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.
