Bringing the Glitz, Glamour of the Awards Tonight – THISDAYLIVE

Another exciting moment in African storytelling beckons, with the Eko Convention Centre, venue of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) 2025 is set for an evening of spectacle, glam, and fashion.

It’s the 11th edition, this year’s celebration is shaping up to be one of its most memorable yet, recognising Africa’s film and television industry. 

The event would be broadcast live on Africa Magic channels across the continent, bringing the glitz and glamour of the awards to millions of viewers across the continent. Over the past decade, the AMVCA has solidified its position as Africa’s premier film event, uniting the continent’s top cinematic talents under one roof.

Tonight will see winners emerge from 28 categories comprising 16 non-voting, 10 audience-voting categories, and two recognition awards – Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer Awards. The nominations, covering film, television, and digital content, recognise works released between January 1 and December 31, 2024.

Among the creative works, Lisabi: The Uprising, Skeleton Coast, House of Ga’a, and Freedom Way secured multiple nominations across various categories, including Best Movie and Best Director. Notably, five out of the eight movies nominated for the prestigious Best Movie award this year made the rounds on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

The nominees for the 2025 Best Movie award include “Christmas in Lagos” (Amazon Prime), Farmer’s Bride, Freedom Way, “House of Gaa” (Netflix), “Inkabi” (Netflix), “Lisabi” (Netflix), “Skeleton Coast,” and “Suspicion” (Amazon Prime).

“Seven Doors,” a Netflix original, tops the list with 11 nominations, followed closely by “Lisabi” with 10. “House of Gaa” and “Inkabi” each secured six nominations, while “Christmas in Lagos” earned five.

In the acting categories, Gideon Okeke (Tokunbo), Stan Nze (Suspicion), Femi Adebayo (Seven Doors), Adedimeji Lateef (Lisabi: The Uprising) are competing for Best Lead Actor, while Chioma Chukwuka (Seven Doors), Bimbo Ademoye (Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre), and Uche Montana (Thinline) are vying for Best Lead Actress.

A major highlight for 2025 AMVCA is the newly Best Music Score category, recognising the fundamental role of sound and music in storytelling. Established to showcase Africa’s diverse storytelling traditions, the AMVCA has become a major event in the continent, boosting African cinema’s global visibility.

This prestigious event has celebrated artistic excellence, spotlighting storytellers with narratives that resonate with diverse audiences across Africa. This year’ event commenced with a series of activities spanning four days, each designed to highlight different aspect of the industry—from pioneers and young talent to African culture and storytelling.

The activities climaxed last night with a vibrant Cultural Day celebration, and tonight the biggest names in African film and television are gathering to experience the emotions and see who will take home the coveted golden plaques with the glamour of the Red Carpet where celebrities, nominees and guests would show up in their best looks.
