Mathematics enthusiasts gathered at the Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, for the first-ever Aba Mathematics Olympiad organised by the Rumexx Foundation, an initiative of Eke Eleanya Urum, founder of Risevest. Rising above the competition, Anyiam Chimezie Divine clinched the grand prize of ₦500,000. In second place was Iwuoha Amblessed Nnaemeka with ₦300,000 and Ike-Umeojiaku Elvis Nzubechukwu, a cash prize of ₦200,000 for third place.

The event, which began on May 3, 2025, featured rigorous rounds that culminated in a grand finale on June 1. A total of 14 secondary schools participated, with invitations extended to 200 schools. The top 10 students received cash prizes, and teachers who demonstrated exceptional guidance were also celebrated with certificates and monetary rewards.

Dr Charles Nworu, mathematician and event coordinator, spoke on the relevance of mathematics in contemporary society:
“Mathematics is the foundation of all scientific and technological advancements. This Olympiad is a timely intervention to reignite interest in mathematics at a time when Artificial Intelligence and other technologies are reshaping industries worldwide.”

Despite the modest turnout, the Rumexx Foundation is determined to transform Aba into a hub of mathematical excellence. Urum, the foundation’s founder, spoke passionately about the initiative’s long-term vision:

“We received tremendous support, including donations from some other founders like Mark Essiem of Hotels. ng, and we want to aim for a bigger event, bigger prizes and more participation next year.”

Nworu also called on the Abia State Government, led by Alex Otti, to prioritise policies that make mathematics a compulsory subject for STEM-related courses in higher institutions.

“Rummex’s goal is to position Aba as a global centre for mathematics and scientific innovation. This requires deliberate efforts such as recruiting top mathematics graduates, offering scholarships, and establishing universities of mathematical sciences to prepare students for the future,” he said.

The Olympiad has set the stage for a brighter future for mathematics education in Nigeria, promising to inspire young minds and redefine Aba’s reputation as a hub of academic and scientific excellence.
