The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Olufemi Soneye, has resigned from his position after nearly two years of service.

Soneye announced his departure in a Facebook post over the weekend, expressing gratitude to colleagues and the company for what he described as a fulfilling and honourable experience.

“I wish to inform you that I have stepped aside from my role as Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd. This decision will allow me to devote more time to my family and attend to personal responsibilities that now require my closer presence,” he wrote.

Describing his time at the national oil company as a “profound honour,” Soneye said he was proud to have contributed to its transformation and pledged continued support for NNPCL’s mission.

“I remain a steadfast supporter and ambassador of NNPC Ltd wherever I go. I enjoin you, dear colleagues, to continue your robust, balanced, and constructive reportage to support the Company’s noble mission and strategic role in Nigeria’s energy future,” he added.

Soneye was appointed to the role on October 18, 2023, replacing Garba Muhammad, who took over as spokesperson in August 2021 during a leadership reshuffle.

Before joining NNPCL, Soneye held a distinguished career in international journalism, working across Nigeria, Australia, and the United States. He served as Editor of the US Air Force One Magazine in Washington, D.C., and led the Nigerian Media Practitioners group in the U.S. capital.

He is affiliated with several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Guild of Corporate Online Media Publishers.

Nigerian Institute of Public Relations recently named Soneye as the 2025 “Spokesperson of the Year” following similar recognition in 2024.
