Pension Crisis: Ogun PDP Demands Accountability For N82bn Unremitted Deductions, Slams Abiodun Over CPS Reform

The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched a scathing attack on Governor Dapo Abiodun and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over what it described as a “monumental betrayal” of workers’ trust, following the government’s renewed push for the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) despite N82 billion in unremitted pension deductions hanging in the balance.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its Publicity Secretary, Otunba (Arc.) Kayode Adebayo, the PDP condemned the Abiodun-led administration for allegedly ignoring the plight of workers and pushing ahead with CPS reforms without first accounting for years of unpaid deductions or putting adequate pension structures in place.

Describing the development as “an unpardonable offense,” the opposition party accused the government of systemic abuse and gross negligence, adding that the administration had forfeited the moral right to initiate any pension reforms until past obligations were settled.

“The organised labour’s rejection of the proposed CPS is not just a protest—it is a cry from a workforce that has been mercilessly robbed and insulted,” the statement read in part.

“Where is the ₦82 billion? Why has the state not accounted for it? Why proceed with pension reforms when the legal frameworks, pension board, remittance culture, and workers’ trust are absent?”

The party said the government’s silence on the whereabouts of the funds amounts to “criminal negligence,” accusing the APC-led administration of playing “roulette with the lives of its workforce.”

It argued that for any CPS reform to succeed, there must first be a credible audit of the outstanding pension liabilities and the creation of a comprehensive pension database, among other institutional frameworks.

The statement noted that the absence of such structures further underscores the party’s claims of mismanagement and insincerity.

“The government has refused to engage Ogun workers in creating a pension database or establishing required institutions. This is irrefutable proof of an intentionally fraudulent administration,” the PDP said.

The party also called on the Ogun State House of Assembly to intervene and join hands with workers and civil society to resist what it described as a “fraudulent distraction.”

It added, “Until Governor Abiodun provides a comprehensive explanation of the missing ₦82 billion, any attempt to proceed with the CPS is a gross disservice to workers who have endured years of pain under this administration.”

The PDP’s statement comes amid mounting tensions between labour unions and the state government over the planned reintroduction of the CPS, which organised labour has already rejected, citing unpaid entitlements and lack of transparency.
