Pro-Wike Faction Seizes PDP National Secretariat, Declares New Acting Chairman

A fresh wave of crisis has rocked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday forcefully took control of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, installing Mohammed Abdulrahman as acting National Chairman amid a deepening leadership tussle.

The Wadata Plaza headquarters witnessed heavy police presence as rival factions battled for control following the suspension of key party officials on both sides.

Umar Damagum, the party’s National Chairman recognised by the National Working Committee (NWC), had earlier suspended National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu and other Wike-aligned officials.

In a swift counter-move, the Wike camp announced Damagum’s suspension and declared Abdulrahman as acting chairman.

Addressing journalists before marching into the secretariat, Abdulrahman accused PDP leaders of running the once-dominant party into a weakened and fractured opposition.

“We are all aware of the pitiable state of our glorious party because of the actions and inactions of our leaders,” he said.

“From being the ruling party for 16 uninterrupted years to becoming a humbled opposition, I have accepted to become Acting National Chairman at this difficult time through the mercy of God and instrumentality of critical stakeholders.”

He vowed to reunite the party, end factional battles, and return the PDP to what he described as a “law-abiding and formidable political force.”

Shortly after his remarks, Abdulrahman and his supporters moved into Wadata Plaza and held a meeting with Anyanwu and other loyalists, formally assuming control of the secretariat.

Damagum loyalists, who also surfaced at the headquarters, were prevented from clashing with the rival camp as security operatives stationed at least 10 patrol vehicles around the complex to maintain order.

Police officers were seen manning key entry points of the building as tensions flared.

The internal battle underscores widening cracks within the PDP as influential blocs struggle for dominance ahead of future elections.

For now, the party’s leadership remains in limbo as both factions stake claim to control, heightening uncertainty over the future direction of the opposition platform.

PLATFORM TIMES will continue to monitor developments as the party braces for what could become one of its most defining power struggles since losing power in 2015.
