Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, have engaged in a fresh war of words following a controversial “thank you” message Fayose sent to the elder statesman after attending his recent birthday celebration.

Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, disclosed on Monday that the former president received an SMS from Fayose shortly after the event. The message, which Fayose tagged a “thank you” note, took a harsh and personal tone.

Fayose had recently met Obadanjo at his Abeokuta residence  which gave an impression that the duo had resolved their differences that started 19 years ago.

But, the latest developement  showed otherwise as the duo trade words following the remarks made by Obadanjo at Fayose’s birthday.

In the text message,  as stated by Akinyeminin the statement, Fayose accused Obasanjo of making “very irresponsible comments” at the birthday party, adding that the former Nigerian leader “went so low at your age.”

The former governor wrote: “I kept quiet or did not reply you at the function so that the world will know the difference between a sane and a mad man that you are.”

He also claimed Obasanjo was suffering from “the heightened stage of dementia,” saying:
“It is also obvious that you have lost your sanity.”

Fayose further demanded a refund of money he alleged Obasanjo acknowledged receiving in public.

“I shall appreciate if you return my money since you publicly admitted you received but Dangote brought you back,” he wrote.

Responding, Obasanjo issued a brief but pointed reply, describing the message as a reflection of Fayose’s character.

Obasanjo wrote: “Ayo, thanks for your ‘Thank You’ message which undisguisedly revealed who and what you are, unchanged and unchangeable.”

He confirmed returning the money through the same channel it was delivered.

“Your money has been sent back through Foluso Adeagbo who brought it and in the same bag as he brought it, unopened by me,” Obasanjo stated.

The exchange has stirred fresh political drama around both men, known for their turbulent political history and frequent public clashes.

Akinyemi signed off the statement on behalf of the former president, dated November 17, 2025.
