Former Osun State Governor and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has intensified his political comeback bid, leading a massive grassroots mobilisation in Lagos to strengthen the party’s base ahead of the 2026 and 2027 elections.
The rally, held over the weekend, drew ADC leaders from across the Southwest as Aregbesola charged party faithful to focus on recruiting new members and consolidating the party’s presence in Nigeria’s economic capital.
“Everybody for now should concentrate on mass mobilisation. Party membership cards will be available soon,” the former Minister of Interior declared, in what party insiders described as a direct push to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Aregbesola’s Lagos outing comes on the heels of his recent political moves, including a high-profile meeting with former Oyo State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, in a bid to lure him into the ADC — a sign of the party’s growing coalition-building efforts.
His defection from the APC followed a bitter fallout with President Bola Tinubu and his eventual expulsion from the ruling party over alleged anti-party activities.
APC chieftains have accused him of spearheading propaganda and attacks against the current administration, an allegation the ADC dismisses as political smear.
Supporters, however, insist that Aregbesola’s track record — from his education reforms in Osun, including the introduction of the “Opon Imo” (Tablet of Knowledge), to his deep-rooted progressive politics — positions him as a formidable force to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.
Despite the ADC’s relatively weak structure in Lagos and other key states such as Kaduna, Enugu, and Delta, Aregbesola’s crowd-pulling capacity appears to be giving the party renewed hope of breaking the stranglehold of established political heavyweights.
Party sources told PLATFORM TIMES that the Lagos mobilisation is only the beginning, with similar grassroots engagements planned across the Southwest in the coming months.
