Popular Nollywood actor, Deyemi Okanlawon, has revealed the personal reason behind his decision to increase his professional fees. The multiple award-winning star, who is regarded as one of the most sought-after actors in the Nigerian film industry, says his adjustment was not just a business move, but a conscious step towards becoming a more present and intentional father.

The father of three boys explained that years of prioritizing work over family had caused him to miss out on crucial stages in the lives of his first two sons.

Determined not to repeat the same mistake, Okanlawon said he has now restructured his career approach to strike a healthier balance between his professional success and his family life.

“I missed a lot of the earlier years of my first and second because I prioritized hustling. Now I’ve changed my work ethos, restructured my business, reduced my workload and stress, and increased my fee so I can spend quality time with my boys and transfer my knowledge of God and life to them,” he stated.

Reflecting on his own upbringing, the Seeking Justice star revealed that his experiences with his late father deeply shaped his approach to parenthood.

“I have no recollection of my father ever hugging, kissing, having deep conversations, or even saying ‘I love you,’. So I became the father who does just that, alongside a healthy dose of daddy’s spanking only when they’ve worked very hard to earn it. As a boy child, I was left to my own devices and the devil had a field day using people to traumatize me left and right. Today, I am fiercely protective of my boys, and if you hear I fought anyone, it’s most likely because they threatened or interfered with my ability to protect and/or provide for my family.”

Okanlawon also noted that his ultimate goal is to build a lasting bond with his sons, one that goes beyond the traditional father-son relationship.

“I just want them to grow up knowing we had the best time of our lives together, and that they see me not just as their father but as a friend and mentor they want to constantly be in touch with.”
