Former Ogun State governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has raised alarm over the deplorable state of roads in Ijebu North East Local Government, urging the state government to urgently intervene to save residents and businesses from further hardship.
Speaking at the Midterm Community Assessment and Review Tour of the BATOGD Movement in Ijebu North East, Daniel lamented that many of the roads have been abandoned for decades despite their importance to the socio-economic life of the people.
“The condition of our road infrastructure is dire, and rehabilitation can no longer be delayed. We therefore implore the government to immediately commence the rehabilitation of eleven key road networks that are central to the economic and social wellbeing of this local government,” Daniel declared.
Among the roads listed for urgent attention are: Atan–Odo Eran–Etiobu–Ododeyo–Ilumerin–Atan Circular Road (15km), Ogidi Junction–Odoregbe–Odosenlu–Imomo (7km), Odosenbora–Ibido–Okeaye–Omu (8km), Ogbogbo–Iworo–Odogogo–Odosiwonade (10km), as well as the Ilese Toll Gate–Ilefon stretch, Post Office Junction–Erunwon (10km), and others.
Daniel, who expressed disappointment at the poor maintenance culture in the state, recalled that the controversial Paddy Arikawe Road in Sagamu was first constructed during his tenure as governor in 2004 but had since been left unattended for over 20 years until a limited constituency intervention.
“The primary responsibility for that road lies with the local and state government. The plank of my message to our state government is simple: we need encouragement, not discouragement, to bring more development home,” he stressed.
On education, Daniel commended President Bola Tinubu for the recent decision of the Federal Government to take over the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) but raised concern over its limited land capacity of 151 hectares, far below the 10,000 hectares required for a standard federal university.
He disclosed that he had submitted a proposal for the establishment of four satellite campuses within a 30km radius of the main Ijagun campus to address the challenge and boost access to tertiary education in Ogun East.
The proposed campuses include:a Skill Acquisition Mini-Campus at Okelugbogun ; the conversion of GIPI (Oil Engineering Services) in Oni Waterside into a campus ; an Artificial Intelligence & Innovation Mini-Campus at Illishan/Odogbolu; and Health Sciences Mini-Campus at Ijebu-Ode.
Daniel added that the proposal also carried symbolic significance, as Ijebu North East is the ancestral home of First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
“Establishing these campuses is the least we can do in her honour. We are earnestly pleading with the State Government to provide the necessary support and encouragement to make this a reality for our people,” he said.
The former governor reaffirmed his loyalty to President Tinubu, describing his economic reforms as “bold but necessary,” while charging political actors in Ogun to rise above “petty politics” and embrace development-driven governance.
He urged residents to remain steadfast, assuring them that his focus remains on facilitating federal projects and ensuring that communities in Ogun East feel the impact of governance.
