The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency has commenced rehabilitation works on the Ilorin–Ogbomoso Highway, as part of efforts to ensure safer and smoother travel during the festive season.

The Officer-in-Charge of FERMA’s Kwara State Field Office, Lukman Onimago, disclosed this to PUNCH on Tuesday during an on-the-spot inspection of the ongoing works on the federal highway.

Onimago advised motorists to drive responsibly and help protect government infrastructure, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility.

“We are appealing to motorists to drive safely and also ensure the protection of government infrastructure. These roads are public assets meant to serve everyone,” he said.

He explained that the rehabilitation exercise is being carried out under “Operation Connect Your Destination,” an annual intervention programme of FERMA implemented nationwide during the yuletide period.

According to him, the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises safe, functional and motorable road networks across the country.

“Operation Connect Your Destination is an annual programme of FERMA, usually intensified during the festive season, to ensure that Nigerians can travel safely to their destinations,” Onimago noted.

He added that, as part of the mandate, FERMA is currently patching potholes and fixing critical failed sections of the Ilorin–Ogbomoso Road to minimise road crashes and traffic disruptions.

“The essence of this rehabilitation is to ensure that every citizen gets to their destination safely and in good time, with a view to reducing road accidents to the barest minimum,” he said.

The project, being executed by the Kwara State Office of FERMA, focuses on improving road usability and easing vehicular movement along the busy highway, which serves as a major link between Kwara and Oyo states.

Motorists and residents along the corridor have welcomed the intervention, urging the Federal Government to sustain regular maintenance of key highways across the country.
