A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) loyal to Nafiu Gombe has released a comprehensive timetable and guidelines for the conduct of its congresses and national convention for the 2025/2026 political year, as part of efforts to strengthen internal democracy and reposition the party ahead of future elections.
The guidelines, contained in a circular personally signed by Gombe, outlined a structured roadmap for party activities beginning in January and culminating in a National Working Committee convention in February 2026.
The development came barely 24 hours after the faction disowned reports of the defection and registration of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, at the party’s Enugu zonal office.
The group, which described itself as the authentic national leadership of the ADC, said the purported registration contravened the party’s constitution and established membership procedures.
According to the circular, activities will commence with a meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees on January 5, followed by a National Executive Committee meeting on January 7.
Key items slated for discussion at the NEC meeting include the filling of vacant positions in the National Working Committee, the fixing of dates for membership registration and revalidation, as well as preparations for ward, local government and state congresses.
“The membership registration and revalidation will take place from January 2 to January 15. This will be followed by ward executive committee congresses on January 17, with matters arising addressed between January 19 and 22,” the circular stated.
It added that local government congresses are scheduled for January 24, while state executive committee congresses will hold on January 31, 2026.
The faction further directed state chapters to set up Congress Planning Committees, stressing that members of such committees must not be aspirants for any state executive position.
Gombe explained that aspirants for state offices are required to formally notify the State Congress Committee of their intention to contest and pay a non-refundable intention fee of N2,000, which may be used to partly fund the conduct of the congresses.
He added that state executive committees would be responsible for supervising the Congress Planning Committees to ensure strict adherence to the laid-down guidelines.
On zoning, the circular stated that the composition of state executive committees should, as much as practicable, reflect the spread of senatorial zones, in line with the party’s constitution.
The faction disclosed that the National Working Committee convention is scheduled to hold between February 13 and 15, 2026.
It also emphasised that only members who are validly registered or revalidated and whose names appear in the official membership register would be eligible to participate in the congresses.
State chapters were further directed to formally notify the party’s National Secretariat of the dates, venues and times of their congresses to ensure proper engagement with the Independent National Electoral Commission.
