Momodu Knocks Utomi Over Obi’s Possible VP Bid

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dele Momodu, has taken a swipe at political economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, over his comments dismissing the possibility of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accepting a vice-presidential slot in the emerging opposition coalition.

Momodu criticised Utomi in a post on his official X handle on Friday, following Obi’s recent defection to the ADC.

Utomi had, during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, warned that he would withdraw his support for Obi if the former Anambra State governor accepted to run as a vice-presidential candidate in the proposed opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 general election.

Reacting, Momodu said he was surprised by Utomi’s stance, arguing that ruling out Obi’s participation in any position within a democratic arrangement was undemocratic and counterproductive.

According to Momodu, democracy thrives on choice and inclusiveness, insisting that no individual should be precluded from contesting for any office within a coalition.

“Anyone insisting that Obi cannot run behind anyone is definitely not a Democrat who wishes to rescue Nigeria from a one-man dictatorship,” Momodu wrote.

The exchange has further exposed deepening disagreements among key figures within the opposition bloc, as permutations intensify over possible alliances and candidates ahead of the 2027 presidential race.

Peter Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, recently defected to the ADC, fuelling fresh debates over his political future and potential role in the proposed opposition coalition.
