The management of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, has expelled three students for unlawful possession of firearms during the institution’s recent Students’ Union Government (SUG) election.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Michael Awoke, announced the expulsion over the weekend during the inauguration of the newly elected SUG executives at the university’s main campus.

Awoke said the decision followed the students’ arrest by the police for allegedly bringing guns and live ammunition to the election venue, an act he described as “a grave affront to academic integrity and campus safety.”

According to him, the suspects not only attempted to scare away voters but also allegedly made moves to attack the Dean of Student Affairs during the violent episode.L

“The era of cultism, intimidation, and violence in Ebonyi State University is over,” Awoke declared.

“As long as Professor Michael Awoke remains Vice Chancellor, no student will get away with acts of lawlessness. Bringing guns into the university to intimidate lecturers or fellow students must stop immediately.”

The Vice Chancellor revealed that the expelled students had already been arraigned in court, adding that the university was following up on the case to ensure justice is served.

“These three students are no longer our students,” he said. “They have been handed over to the law, and the university will not shield anyone involved in crime.”

Prof. Awoke emphasized that the institution under his leadership would not tolerate cultism, examination malpractice, or any form of violence.

“This expulsion will serve as a deterrent to others,” he warned. “EBSU is an academic community built on discipline and peace, and we are committed to maintaining that standard.”

The university’s move has drawn commendation from some staff and students who described it as a bold step toward curbing rising insecurity and cult-related violence in tertiary institutions across the country.
