Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress and ex-Governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has returned to Nigeria after weeks in Dubai, amid heightened political manoeuvrings over the reported plan by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to defect to the APC.
Ganduje arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Saturday at about 4:30pm aboard an Emirates Airline flight and was expected to proceed to Abuja later in the evening.
Although no official link was established, political observers believe Ganduje’s return is connected to ongoing efforts to fine-tune arrangements for the anticipated defection of Governor Yusuf, currently the only sitting governor elected on the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party.
In a statement issued by his Chief of Staff, Muhammad Garba, Ganduje’s itinerary following his return includes a series of consultations with party leaders and key stakeholders, particularly on recent political developments in Kano State.
The statement said the engagements are aimed at reviewing the evolving political landscape and strengthening internal cohesion within the APC.
It added that Ganduje is also expected to participate in the party’s ongoing nationwide electronic membership registration exercise, which was initiated during his tenure as APC National Chairman.
“The e-registration exercise was designed to modernise the party’s membership database, enhance internal planning and ensure that membership records are credible and easily accessible,” the statement read.
According to the aide, the former governor remains committed to rebuilding party structures and promoting inclusive dialogue in support of democratic consolidation within the APC, especially in Kano State.
Speculation over Governor Yusuf’s possible defection has intensified in recent weeks, though the Kano State Government has yet to issue an official position on the matter.
