The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it is expecting a formal response from the Federal Government on Monday as its ongoing two-week warning strike enters its sixth day today (Sunday).
Speaking in Abuja, ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, said the union was awaiting feedback from the Ministry of Education following stalled talks over key unresolved issues.
“We are awaiting feedback from the ministry on Monday. There’s nothing further to report at this moment,” Piwuna said.
The nationwide strike, declared on October 13, followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government on September 28, after negotiations on outstanding demands reached a deadlock.
Piwuna described the ongoing industrial action as “total and comprehensive,” in line with a resolution of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC).
Meanwhile, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau has assured that the National Assembly is ready to mediate between both parties to prevent a prolonged shutdown of academic activities across public universities.
Earlier in the week, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced that discussions between the government and ASUU were nearing conclusion.
He disclosed that the Tinubu administration had released ₦50 billion for Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) and budgeted ₦150 billion in the 2025 fiscal plan for the revitalization of public universities, to be disbursed in three installments.
However, ASUU insists that government promises must translate into concrete action. The union’s key demands include:
Finalization and implementation of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement;
Release of three and a half months’ withheld salaries;
Sustainable funding and revitalization of public universities;
An end to alleged victimization of lecturers at LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri;
Payment of 25–35% salary arrears and promotion arrears pending for over four years; and
Release of withheld third-party deductions, including cooperative contributions and union dues.
