Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has cautioned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) against sidelining former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, in the build-up to the 2027 general election, warning that the party could slide into political obscurity if it fails to present him as its presidential candidate.
Fayose, who spoke during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, described Obi as the single most important political asset within the ADC, arguing that no other figure in the party currently possesses the capacity to attract widespread national support.
According to the former governor, Obi’s political appeal goes beyond party structures, stressing that his popularity and influence were clearly demonstrated during the 2023 general election when his emergence as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate helped the previously marginal party secure seats in the House of Representatives.
Fayose said Obi’s presence alone confers relevance on any political platform he joins, insisting that the ADC’s fortunes in 2027 are largely tied to whether or not it fields him as its flag bearer.
“Peter Obi is the life in ADC,” Fayose declared.
“I’m not saying there are no other human beings in ADC, but the truth is that others are largely spent forces. Obi is the only traction, the only meaning and the only factor that gives the party relevance.”
He argued that Obi would command massive followership even if he contested on the platform of a relatively unknown party, noting that his influence is rooted more in personal credibility and public trust than party machinery.
The former Ekiti governor, however, clarified that his comments were not a prediction of victory or defeat for Obi in the 2027 presidential race. Rather, he maintained that ADC would be worse off politically if it failed to present Obi as its candidate.
“I’m not saying Obi will win or lose,” Fayose said. “But I’m telling you that if ADC fails to field Obi, their case will be worse than their coming together.”
Fayose’s remarks come amid growing permutations ahead of the 2027 elections, with political observers closely watching the moves of key opposition figures and smaller parties seeking to reposition themselves on the national stage.
