Okpebholo mourns Ekpoma kidnap victim, vows security action

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has expressed deep sorrow over the kidnapping and killing of a young man in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.

PUNCH Online had reported that the incident, which occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, had sparked fear and outrage among residents, particularly students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.

According to a post via his verified X handle on Monday, the governor described the killing as tragic and heartbreaking, while extending his condolences to the victim’s family, friends and the entire Ekpoma community.

“I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the kidnapping and killing of a young man in Ekpoma on Friday, January 9, 2026. This tragic incident is heartbreaking, and I extend my sincere condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and the entire Ekpoma community during this very painful time,” Okpebholo said.

He acknowledged the fear, anger and frustration the incident has generated among residents, stressing that no one should live in fear or feel unsafe in their own community.

The governor disclosed that he personally visited Ekpoma to assess the situation and met with community leaders and other stakeholders.

According to him, security agencies have been directed to intensify operations in Ekpoma and surrounding areas to prevent further incidents and ensure that those responsible are apprehended and brought to justice.

“I have directed our security agencies to intensify operations, with immediate measures to prevent further incidents. We are working closely with all relevant authorities to strengthen security and restore calm,” he stated.

Reaffirming his commitment to the safety of Edo residents, Okpebholo said the protection of lives and property remains his administration’s highest priority.

“I hear the voices of our people, and I am committed to taking decisive action. I stand with Ekpoma, and I will not relent until safety is fully restored,” the governor added.
