The Presidency on Friday dismissed claims linking President Bola Tinubu’s recent replacement of Service Chiefs to an alleged coup attempt within the military, insisting that the move was a normal exercise in line with constitutional powers.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, made this clarification in a statement issued in Abuja.
Dare explained that President Tinubu’s decision to appoint new Service Chiefs was a routine administrative action aimed at repositioning the nation’s security architecture for improved efficiency.
He stressed that the President, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has the constitutional authority to appoint or replace Service Chiefs at any time in pursuit of national security objectives.
“The appointment of new Service Chiefs is a routine. The President, as the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic, can make appointments just as he changed ministers a few months ago,” Dare said.
He noted that the move should not be misinterpreted as a response to any instability within the military or as confirmation of any coup rumour circulating on social media.
Dare further reaffirmed that the nation’s democracy remains stable and secure, adding that the administration’s priority is to strengthen defence institutions and ensure effective coordination among the armed forces.
President Tinubu on Friday announced the sack of former Service Chiefs and named their replacements, a development that has since generated mixed reactions across the country
