In the traditional setting, chieftaincy titles are a mark of prestige among the Igbo people. It is bestowed on those who show outstanding character, leadership, philanthropy, and service to their community.

This time, however, the palace decided to honour Ben-Obi, as, over the years in her career, she has been recognised for her achievements in leadership, philanthropy, and for championing women and youth in STEM fields.
