Over 10 JAMB Officials Facing Corruption Trials — Oloyede

..JAMB Vows Crackdown on Parents, Staff Fueling Admission Frau

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has raised the alarm over rising cases of underage admissions and parental involvement in what he described as “education fraud” in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

Oloyede, who spoke in Abuja on Wednesday at the National Executive Council meeting of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), also disclosed that more than 10 JAMB officials are currently being prosecuted over corruption-related offences.

“Though we strive to promote and enhance the welfare of our staff, we maintain strict discipline,” he said.

“Currently, more than 10 staff members are facing sanctions for corruption-related offences. We reward dedication, but we deal decisively with misconduct.”

He stressed that the board had adopted a strict anti-corruption stance anchored on transparency and accountability, noting that corruption remains one of the biggest threats to public institutions.

The JAMB boss condemned parents who, he said, deploy wealth and influence to force illegal admissions for their children, especially those below the approved age.

“Many parents today try to use money or influence to secure academic shortcuts for their children,” he lamented.

“We are seeing the disturbing trend of underage admission into tertiary institutions. Education is not a race; it is a process.”

Describing the rush to push minors into universities as “a misplaced status pursuit,” Oloyede noted that some schools have erased Primary Six, forcing 10- and 11-year-old pupils into secondary schools and eventually universities.

“Globally, admissions are based on age, not just academic grades,” he stressed.

He reaffirmed that JAMB’s minimum-age requirement of 16 for admission remains non-negotiable, insisting it exists to protect children, not punish them.

Oloyede also highlighted several staff welfare initiatives designed to discourage corrupt behaviour and improve productivity, including:1 3th-month salary; 10% examination allowance ; Comprehensive health insurance ;₦3m to ₦10m retirement benefits; and special medical support for critical illnesses.

“No JAMB staff facing a serious medical condition is left to beg for assistance,” he said.
“Just this morning, over ₦12m was approved for the treatment of one staff member at the National Hospital.”

He added that airport-duty staff also receive daily meals and transportation stipends, stating that welfare initiatives are obligations, not privileges.

“When workers are well cared for, they perform better. But if we expect much and give little, we invite frustration and corruption.”

Oloyede commended NASU for its stabilising impact on the education sector, urging stakeholders to join in building a system rooted in fairness, discipline and accountability.

“Your resilience and integrity continue to inspire institutions like ours,” he said.

“Let us continue to build a future anchored on fairness, discipline and shared prosperity.”

He reiterated JAMB’s commitment to strict enforcement of its rules and protection of the integrity of Nigeria’s admissions process.
