The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lambasted Governor Dapo Abiodun over what it described as the “shameful and worsening” condition of roads across the state, accusing the governor of shifting blame instead of taking responsibility after more than six years in office.
In a strongly-worded statement released on Thursday and signed by its Chairman, Hon. Abayomi Tella, the opposition party said residents across the three senatorial districts now endure untold hardship due to the deplorable condition of roads, despite a rise in federal allocations and internally generated revenue.
“It is appalling that after over six years as governor, Mr. Abiodun is still blaming past administrations for his failures,” the PDP said.
“Ogun has regrettably become a laughing stock on social media and among Nigerians due to the embarrassing state of our roads.”
The party said that despite repeated appeals by citizens, the state government had failed to tackle deteriorating roads in major areas including Abeokuta, Ijoko, Sango, Ayetoro, Alagbole, Ewekoro, Ajura and other rural communities.
According to Tella, the road crisis has crippled economic activities, increased transport and logistics costs for businesses, and endangered residents who navigate dangerous and abandoned stretches daily.
“Businesses are struggling to survive. Residents suffer daily stress and avoidable discomfort, yet the governor is on an endless voyage of excuses,” he said.
“Government is a continuum. The people did not elect you to trade blames; they elected you to deliver good governance.”
The PDP insisted that the administration had no excuse, citing “unprecedented” revenue inflow, but accused the government of incompetence and “an unpardonable lack of capacity.”
“The ruling APC government is a colossal waste of Ogun’s precious time and potential,” the statement added. “The people deserve better. Governor Abiodun must apologise, stop the excuses, roll up his sleeves and fix Ogun’s roads without delay.”
The opposition party vowed to continue mounting pressure on the government until urgent steps are taken to rehabilitate critical infrastructure across the state.
“Enough is enough,” the party declared.
While Governor Abiodun had repeatedly attributed the state’s infrastructure challenges to abandoned projects inherited from previous governments, residents and stakeholders have intensified calls for immediate intervention as many communities remain cut off and businesses struggle to operate.
The state government had not responded to the PDP’s comments as of press time.
