The National Emergency Management Agency reported that it conducted 87 relief interventions for 17,000 persons displaced by various disasters in 2025.

The North-West Zonal Director of NEMA, Mr Sani Lokoja, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on the agency’s relief activities in the zone on Friday in Kaduna.

Lokoja said the displaced persons were victims of banditry, flooding, rainstorms, windstorms, fire outbreaks and communal clashes in different parts of the zone.

He stated that the agency conducted a total of 87 relief interventions during the year under review, providing support to affected individuals in various communities.

According to him, Kaduna State recorded the highest number of interventions with 34 operations, followed by Sokoto with 33 and Kano with 20.

Lokoja said Kebbi recorded 16 interventions, while Katsina recorded 14, Jigawa recorded seven and Zamfara recorded six.

He explained that banditry remained a major cause of displacement in Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and parts of Kebbi States.

According to him, flooding and windstorms accounted for most of the interventions in Kano State and Jigawa, while fire outbreaks affected both urban and rural communities across the zone.

The zonal director said NEMA had provided relief materials and emergency support to displaced and affected persons in line with its mandate.

Lokoja added that the agency worked with state and local governments, as well as other relevant stakeholders, to stabilise affected communities.

He stressed the need for improved preparedness and coordination to address the rising security and climate-related risks in the North-West.
