The Edo State Government has finalised plans to train 800 youths in digital skills to prepare them for future challenges.
The state Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, disclosed this in Benin on Wednesday at the flag-off of a six-month Advanced Job Ready Tech Skills Training, organised by the Edo State Government in collaboration with Google and DeepTech Ready.
The commissioner urged students to take advantage of the opportunity, saying it would enhance their tech skills and make them globally relevant.
He said, “We are going to be certifying about 800 of our students in tech skills so that we can give them opportunities in the international space.
“We are going to be doing a serious drive in terms of computer-based test centres, putting students together to learn so that they can also compete anywhere in the world.”
Iyamu said the state government was committed to empowering youths with the latest digital skills to prepare them for the future.
He added that the government was also ready to support youths who are determined to achieve their dreams.
Iyamu disclosed that for the digital skills drive, the governor had approved the revamp of the state tech hub, adding that no fewer than 25 computer-based test centres were about to be created for the purpose.
At the event, Miss Elizabeth Chiketarauba, a 400-level Mechatronics Engineering student of the University of Benin, exhibited a modern solar-powered tricycle invented by her.
Chiketarauba, who said her experience in a traffic jam compelled her to invent the machine, disclosed that it has the ability to charge phones, power a home and be used by barbers.
Impressed by the invention, Iyamu announced a one million naira support for the student on behalf of the state government and urged students to think outside the box and be innovative.
