The Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has called on residents to translate the spiritual lessons of Ramadan into practical actions that promote unity and accelerate development.
The Governor made the appeal on Sunday during a special Ramadan lecture held at the Sultan Muhammadu Maccido Mosque, Sokoto, organised by the Yoruba Muslims Community.
He was represented by his Special Adviser on Resident Communities, Maryam Suleiman.
Addressing Islamic scholars, community leaders, and faithful attendees, Aliyu said Ramadan instils self-discipline, empathy, and sacrifice—virtues that should extend beyond personal worship to foster collective responsibility in society.
He stressed that every resident of Sokoto, regardless of ethnic or occupational background, has a role to play in the state’s progress.
Communities, he noted, could contribute through simple but impactful actions such as maintaining cleanliness, supporting local businesses, volunteering for community projects, and offering constructive ideas to government agencies.
“Ramadan reminds us of our duties not only to Allah but also to our neighbours and our community. It is a period of deep reflection on how we can better our society,” the Governor said.
He further emphasised that sustainable development is a shared responsibility, achievable only when residents actively participate in building peaceful and progressive communities.
Participants widely commended the lecture, describing Aliyu’s message as a timely blend of religious obligation and civic duty. Many expressed optimism that the Ramadan spirit would strengthen unity and inspire citizens to support the state’s development agenda.
In his lecture, the Chief Imam of the Yoruba Muslims Community in Sokoto, Prof. Suleiman Rabiu, reminded Muslims that Ramadan is a time to renew their commitment to Allah and humanity, urging the faithful to assist the less privileged and strengthen communal bonds during the fasting period.
The event concluded with prayers for peace, unity, and continued progress in Sokoto State.
